In recent years, there has been a significant evolution in the use of Application to Person (A2P) messaging. Historically, A2P has been used for notifications and as an invoicing mechanism for simple content and services - for one-off downloads or actions, as well as for repeated payments.
The last case of use has significantly decreased over the last 5 years due to a combination of transition to an economy based on applications, largely conditioned by card billing and regulatory action against fraudsters.
Development of the A2P messaging market
It is expected that the volume of A2P messaging will increase by 20 % within the next 5 years to more than 2.7 trillion by 2022 - this is from 2.1 trillion in 2017, according to the latest world market analysis by Juniper Research.
Analysts say that this growth will depend on the increase in the number of automated marketing, payment and authentication messages. Note, the A2P is defined as an automatic SMS message sent from the enterprise to the end user.
The study showed that the gray traffic route, defined as A2P traffic, veiled as P2P traffic, will drop 11 percent between 2017 and 2022. Operators' efforts in partnership with SMS firewall providers in the search for gray routes will continue to be the driving forces behind this reduction.
If in 2022 the overall forecast of SMS traffic exceeds 30 billion messages per day, market research has shown that artificial intelligence (AI) will be required to effectively analyze high level of SMS traffic.
